Salt & Straw Will Revolutionize Ice Cream!

 

Hats off to Kim Malek and her new Artisan ice cream concept Salt & Straw (currently located via a mobil cart at 1733 NE Alberta, with a permanent location currently under construction at 2035 NE Alberta Street).

The days of vanilla versus chocolate will soon make way to flavors such as the above Coppa & Melon Sherbet, Brown Ale & Bacon, Pear & Blue Cheese, and Mimosa Sorbet.

Walmart Neighborhood Market...Isn't that an oxymoron?

Walmart is actively working and negotiating on approximately 17 grocery locations in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area.  Many of the "Neighborhood Market" locations have already been leased and/or purchased and Walmart is completing their due diligence before making any public announcements to avoid the inventible neighborhood resistance to the world's biggest retailer.  Walmart has plans to open both suburban and urban stores that will be approximately 40,000 +/- square foot in size.  The first grocery store will open along Highway 26 in the former Ashley Furniture store site at NW Cornell and 173rd in Beaverton.  Many of the new store locations will be in closed grocery store sites that already allow the permitted use and thus, no neighborhood approval will be needed or asked.   According to several local real estate sources Walmart has leased or purchased the following locations:

• Raleigh Hills: Ex-Zupan's@Beav.-Hillsdale Hwy & Apple Way
• Lake Grove:   Ex-Whole Foods @Boones Ferry Rd & Jean Rd.
• West Linn:     Ex-Lamb's Thriftway @ Hwy 43 & Hidden Valley 
• Gresham:      Ex-QFC @ 182nd & Powell
• Gresham:      Ex-Food 4 Less @ Powell & Burnside
• Beaverton:     Ex-Haggen's @ SW Murray & 147th
• Vancouver:    Ex-Fred Meyer @ 4th Plain & Grand
• Vancouver:    Ex-Winco @ Hwy 500 & Thurston Way
• Oregon City:   Molalla Ave. & S. Beavercreek (land parcel)
• Salmon Creek: 134th & I-5 (land parcel)
• Tigard:           SW Greenburg Rd. & Hwy 217
• Oak Grove:     Ex-G.I. Joe's @ SE McLoughlin & Concord

Also rumored are negotiations for several close-in urban locations in north and southeast Portland...SE Belmont and North Williams...imagine those neighborhood meetings!

June is Dining Month!

We are half way through June and just realizing that June is Dining Month in Portland!  

Eat a three course meal for $25 at one of Portland's finest restaurants and help out the Oregon Food Bank while doing so - not too shabby.  Many restaurants are participating including some of our favorites;  Nel Centro, Blue Hour, Lincoln and Nostrana.

Coffee, Tea or Wine? - Starbucks Grand Opening

Starbucks Coffee has opened it's first Oregon beer and wine location in The Brewery Blocks at NW 10th & Couch Street.  The special early preview last Friday night was well received and had all the makings of a good party; lots of VIPs, live music, rare coffee and most importantly, a quality selection of wine and beer.  Starbucks has raised the quality of their design with this beautiful, industrial chic, LEED certified interior.  Reclaimed materials were evident through out the space with an art installation made from recycled bike tire inner tubes, salvaged Douglas fir paneling, old local bar tops and salvaged furniture.

The fortified beverage list included the following beer and wines: Stella, Rogue, Deschutes Brewery, Widmer, Kings Estate, Chateau Ste. Michelle, William Hill, Erath, Joel Gott, etc. Also, the food menu has been extended with special local offerings (fingers crossed here).

Coming soon to NE Portland: Fire on the Mountain Restaurant and Brewery and Golden Oven Bakery. Urban Works had the pleasure of working with these two notable local businesses. Fire on the Mountain will be opening later this summer on NE Fremont and 57th and Golden Oven will move in next door to Case Study Coffee on NE Sandy and 53rd. Delicious!
