Originally, The Galleria was a department store...Olds, Wortman & King was the retail anchor of downtown Portland's west end from 1910-1970. As the "galleria trend" of the mid-1970s ushered indoor malls via southern California, Portland's Galleria was renovated and opened in 1976. Remember The Jean Machine, the Greek cafe serving the best giro ever, The gelato shop, Mario's, the clove and cigarette counter on the second floor and the ever present Made in Oregon store?
Sadly, those retailers went away with disco (except Made in Oregon...Naito company owned). After several interior renovations and far too many, family smack-downs... The Galleria might have come full circle. Jeff Manning at The Oregonian reports today that Target has entered into negotiations with the Bill Naito clan (please no fighting) to open the omnipresent mega retailer sometime in 2011 or 2012.
I bet John Carroll, Sam Adams and the PDC has their fingers double-crossed!
