Portland’s entrepreneurs are breathing new life into the Rose City neighborhood along NE Sandy Blvd. Cabezon Restaurant and Fish Market just opened for business in the former Violet’s Cafe space at NE 52nd and Sandy and Case Study Coffee is going through permitting as we speak for their new coffee shop near Du’s Grill at NE 53rd and Sandy. The time is ripe for more goods and services to cater to this burgeoning market.
I happen to know for a FACT that Case Study Coffee features the best coffee and most dedicated baristas in Portland - watch out NE Sandy, a new standard of caffeinated gloriousness is headed your way!

This lovely new space just opened in my neighborhood.
The owners have obviously put a lot of thought and love into it. It's a beautifully renovated, bright and airy building (though because it's right on Sandy, it's very noisy).
The coffee is very good (they serve Stumptown). My latte was good, though with just a touch of bitterness - not quite the sweetness that one gets at Stumptown's own stores.
The major drawback and disappointment for me is that they don't seem to have much in the way of food and no bagels at all. I overheard the lady behind the counter say in answer to another customer's question that they aren't planning to carry them. I can see why, They're obviously focussing on the Making Great Coffee and don't want to be dealing with food much.
But for me, as just a regular customer who wants a great local place to get my morning coffee on a daily basis, there's got to be a breakfast component, or I'm just hungry and wired (which will not do). I'm a daily latte drinker (abuser) and if Case Study had the lowly bagel on offer, I'd most likely move my custom to their lovely space, but since they don't, I'll go every once in a while for an afternoon fix, maybe, but I'll continue to drive the 3 miles or so to the nearest Stumptown, where they serve great coffee *and* bagels.

A fish market and a coffee shop? WOW! We're heading off to Destin for a vacation next month, 'coz my nephew told me about a lot of these awesome shops and restaurants. I can't wait 'til we get there!!
