Official word ciruclated yesterday about Green Zebra Grocery's third "healthy convenience" location at SE 50th & Division; press release at Sustainable Business Oregon.
While this is the third location to be secured by the local grocer, it is the first location to announce its slated opening for mid-2014! The Woodstock and Kenton stores have yet to announce their opening dates.

Portland's Central Eastside is back in the national news spot light (well, if you consider USA Today national news) with USA Today top ten list of "10 best neighborhoods that tourists haven't found yet" by Libby McMillan, 10Best.com.
The list gives great props to new rock-and roll-and-piza hot spot Sizzle Pie, Boke Bowl, Le Pigeon, American Barista and Coffee School, Dig a Pony, Rum Club, Kir Wine Bar and Mirakutei. Thanks to Brad Malsin for the heads up!
Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette, the retailer that put thrift store shopping on the map in Oregon, is slated to open retail outlets in The Dalles and Clackamas this coming October.
This outstanding retailer's success has lead to the creation of countless jobs and has been a pivotal tool to fulfill their mission of providing vocational opportunities to people with barriers to employment.

What will the district eventually be known as? The Central Eastside Industrial District or Produce Row? As existing and new companies struggle with gentrification issues of sharing an evolving district it is fascinating to watch the stakeholders position themselves along their respective party lines. Remember a similar debate when the Pearl District began their evolution twenty years ago?
Is there room for industrial, retail and creative office operators? Sure there is! The Southeast Quadrant Plan will attempt to address that very question in the coming year. Leadership from city planners and our new city council is needed now to answer this on-going uncertainty before further indecision misses an opportunity for positive change. The city recognizes that many of the buildings in the district are used for small scale office and retail even though the majority of the zoning code does not technically approve such "uses" within the neighborhood. The PDC even promotes and encourages new start-up, creative businesses with grants and free rent in their recently announced PDX Challenge. That type of hypocrisy drives existing industrial stakeholders crazy. Those "creative uses" can not be ignored any further, the city can't have it's cake and eat it too. Nobody wants another Pearl District but rather something that is completely unique, independent and interesting to Portland. The organic change that has begun to take place should be allowed "officially" and encouraged by the city. Balancing the city's desire to evolve with both form and function are critical to smart growth. All cities change and that is what keeps them vital and interesting...that is what real estate is all about...change.
Recently, the Oregon Technology Business Center has experienced a problem... Too many startups and not enough space. One could argue that this would be considered a "good problem" for the OTBC, which recently had to expand its current footprint from 4,400 SF to 7,000 SF. The additional space will allow existing Tenants to grow within the center and will also add a few potential meeting/seminar rooms for all to use. Many feel that this tremendous growth can be directly related to current trend of entrepreneurs - Up 60 percent in the U.S. since last year. The gourmet local coffee brand Ristretto Roasters will close their Beaumont flagship location in exchange for more space at The Central Eastside Lofts at NE Couch & 6th.
